      Virtual Private Cloud

      Release note
      12 Nov 2024
      Private Path services for VPC
Private Path services are now generally available. Private Path services provide targeted and directional connectivity between VPCs and accounts, allowing only consumers to initiate connections to the provider's service endpoint. Explicit authorization gives providers full control of who can access their services. A Private Path service requires a Private Path network load balancer to deploy a service on IBM Cloud, as well as a Virtual Private Endpoint (VPE) gateway for consumers to connect to the service. To get started, providers can create a Private Path service. For more information, see the Private Path solution guide.
Cluster networks for VPC (select availability)
Cluster Networks for VPC is now selectively available for select customers. Contact IBM Support if you are interested in using this functionality. Cluster networks provide high-bandwidth, low-latency networking for workloads such as AI training and large-scale simulations. You can now create cluster networks using a cluster network profile, which defines the cluster network performance characteristics and capabilities. The H100 cluster network profile is the first cluster network profile being introduced. It provides a specialized network that implements the RoCEv2 protocol to enable remote direct memory access for your workloads that are running on the gx3d-160x1792x8h100 instance profile. For more information, see About cluster networks.

Secure boot for Virtual Servers for VPC (GA)
Secure boot is now generally available. Secure boot is a security standard that makes sure that your server starts with trusted software by verifying the digital signatures for all code in the boot process. When a server starts in secure boot mode, the firmware checks the signature of the boot software, including UEFI firmware drivers, EFI applications, and the operating system. If the signatures are valid, the server boots, and the firmware grants control to the operating system. Which means that secure boot helps prevent malicious software from loading when your server starts. For more information, see Secure boot for Virtual Servers for VPC.

Point In Time Recovery (PITR) speed enhancements for the Enterprise plan
Point in Time Recovery allows database administrators greater granularity when restoring a backup to a particular point in time, as a means to recover from data corruption or accidental deletion. Speed is key when recovering from a disaster. The latest release provides enhancements to the speed of restore when using PITR functionality. By enhancing the backend processes that deal with these restores, these are now 3-4 times faster than before. Actual restore times for individual database deployments are a function of the size of the data under management in the deployment. PITR is only available on the Enterprise plan.

      IBM watsonx Code Assistant

      Release note
      24 Jun 2024
      New capabilities

      New capabilities include bug fixes.

      Known issue

Generate Java classes is not supported for COBOL programs that have a hyphen (-) character in their PROGRAM-ID paragraph. This issue will be fixed in a future release.

If the PROGRAM-ID of the COBOL program for which you want to run Generate Java classes contains a hyphen character, follow the steps in the User Action required section of this release note.

      User action required

If you generate a Java class for a COBOL program with a hyphen character in its PROGRAM-ID, it fails with the error Class Mapping Command Utilities error handler: Server error occurred while retrieving Java classes. Try again. For more information, check the full log in the Output view..

      To mitigate this issue:

      1. Change the PROGRAM-ID to something that doesn't include a hyphen
      2. In Visual Studio Code, right click the edited COBOL, then select watsonx Code Assistant for Z
      3. Select Prepare COBOL for Transformation.
      4. After you prepare the edited COBOL file, right click the same COBOL file, select watsonx Code Assistant for Z, then select Select COBOL for Transformation.

You can now generate Java classes successfully.

If you generate or regenerate a Java method and:

      • It fails with the error message Server error occurred while translating COBOL to Java. Try again. For more information, check the full log in the Output view.
      • The last message in the Output view includes Select from Catalog db failed to find any entry for the given inputs for app name EZSCH, program name.

You need to delete the Java class design data from your database.

      1. Run two SQL queries against your database, replacing $program-id with the PROGRAM-ID of your COBOL program:
      DELETE FROM EZSCH.WCAZCATALOG WHERE appName = 'EZSCH' AND fileKey = '$program-id' AND moduleName = 'oodesigner' AND secondaryKey = 'CH'; DELETE FROM EZSCH.WCAZCATALOG WHERE appName = 'EZSCH' AND fileKey = '$program-id' AND moduleName = 'semantic-mapping' AND secondaryKey = 'mapping';

If you use the Db2 Connect extension for Visual Studio Code, and you connected the extension to your database, you can use it to run these SQL queries:

      1. Create a cleanup_jcd.sql file that contains the SQL queries.
      2. Open the Db2 Connect extension and click the Execute SQL File icon
      3. Choose the cleanup_jcd.sql file and click Execute.

After you run the SQL queries, you need to generate Java classes first before you can generate Java methods.

If you generate Java classes and:

      • It fails with the error message Class Mapping Command Utilities error handler: Server error occurred while retrieving Java classes. Try again. For more information, check the full log in the Output view.
      • The last message in the Output view includes Deserializing from class hierarchy bytes from db failed with, then you need to delete Java transformation data from your database.

You need to delete the Java transformation data from your database:

      1. Run two SQL queries against your database, replacing $program-id with the PROGRAM-ID of your COBOL program:
      DELETE FROM EZSCH.WCAZCATALOG WHERE appName = 'EZSCH' AND fileKey = '$program-id' AND moduleName = 'oodesigner' AND secondaryKey = 'CH'; DELETE FROM EZSCH.WCAZCATALOG WHERE appName = 'EZSCH' AND fileKey = '$program-id' AND moduleName = 'oodesigner' AND secondaryKey = 'TranslateValidateInput'; DELETE FROM EZSCH.WCAZCATALOG WHERE appName = 'EZSCH' AND fileKey = '$program-id' AND moduleName = 'semantic-mapping' AND secondaryKey = 'mapping';

If you use the Db2 Connect extension for Visual Studio Code, and you connected the extension to your database, you can use it to run these SQL queries:

      1. Create a cleanup_db.sql file that contains the SQL queries.
      2. Open the Db2 Connect extension and click the Execute SQL File icon
      3. Choose the cleanup_db.sql file and click Execute.

After you run the SQL queries, you can generate Java classes for your program.

When you create a server on IBM Cloud® Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) using an x86 profile, you can use an operating system that is not listed in IBM Cloud by specifying a generic operating system custom image. You can create this custom image by specifying one of the new operating systems with properties that indicate it is generic. When you provision a server by using a generic operating system custom image, most operating system-specific provisioning steps aren't performed, such as console setup and automatic registration. You must provide the appropriate user data if you want your generic operating system custom image to perform these steps. For more information, see Generic operating system custom images and Creating a generic operating system custom image.
Network boot of operating systems with Bare Metal Servers for VPC (GA)
Network boot of operating systems is now generally available. When you create a bare metal server on IBM Cloud® Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), you can select to network boot an operating system over the network. The operating system image can be hosted on your own server or on a public server. You can install the booted operating system to a disk or you can run the operating system without a disk. For more information, see Network booting your own operating system with Bare Metal Servers on VPC.

      New capabilities

      New capabilities include:

      • Bug fixes
      • Support preparation for transformation of COBOL programs to Java by using the watsonx Code Assistant for Z extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Code. You need to use IBM Passport Advantage to download version 1.1.3 of the extension, then install it in Visual Studio Code.
      User action required

A defect in the backend component that causes watsonx Code Assistant for Z to infrequently return empty methods during the Generate Java methods process.

If you generate a Java method and:

      • It fails with the error message Error locating metadata needed for transformation. Try again. For more information, check the full log in the Output view.
      • The last message in the full log is Core Mapping not found for project EZSCH.

You need to regenerate your Java classes.

      1. Click the Generate Java classes icon.
      2. Choose the directory where you want to generate Java class files.
      3. Optional: Edit any names in the Java class design view that you want to change.
      4. Click Generate Java classes.
      5. If you choose a directory that already contains Java class files with duplicate file names, you need to confirm if you want to overwrite existing files with the new files.

If you see a message similar to Could not find OO Designer config in database for project EZSCH, program name LGACDB01:

      1. Check that the file name of the COBOL program file matches the PROGRAM-ID paragraph within the COBOL source.
      2. If they differ, update the file name to match the value of PROGRAM-ID.
      3. Rescan by using IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence (ADDI).

For example, a COBOL program with the following PROGRAM-ID paragraph is in a source file named LGACDB01.cbl.

Update firmware on Bare Metal Servers for VPC (beta)

With the new Update firmware action on Bare Metal Servers for VPC, you can see if a firmware update is available for your bare metal server and also initiate the update. You can use the UI, CLI, and API to update the firmware. In the UI, this action is only visible if the server is stopped and there is a firmware update available. It is recommended to back up your bare metal server before any firmware update. For more information, see Managing Bare Metal Servers for VPC.

Protocol state filtering on virtual network interfaces can be updated

Protocol state filtering works well if the packet forwarding path and the return path are the same, and if the packet forwarding path is never changed. However, the VPC routing table supports two-way ECMP routes. When a two-way ECMP route is configured, the forward path might differ from the return path and protocol state filtering can cause legitimate packets to drop. You can now disable protocol state filtering when intermittent routing issues occur. For more information, see Protocol state filtering mode.

Third-party image billing and metering (GA)

When you select a catalog image, you now have associated billing plans to choose from. Catalog images are billed in one of the following ways.

Next generation instance profiles available in Tokyo and Osaka regions (select availability)
The 3rd generation of IBM Cloud Virtual Servers for VPC are now available as a select availability offering in the Tokyo (jp-tok) and Osaka (jp-osa) regions, in addition to the Dallas (us-south), London (eu-gb), Frankfurt (eu-de), Washington DC (us-east), Toronto (ca-tor), Madrid (eu-es), and Sydney (au-syd) regions. This new generation features virtual server profile families hosted exclusively on 4th Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors to provide the most powerful and performant general-purpose profiles available. For more information, see Next generation instance profiles. In the Balanced family, see the bx3d profiles tab. In the Compute family, see the cx3d profiles tab. In the Memory family, see the mx3d profiles tab. 3rd generation dedicated host profiles are also available. For more information, see bx3d, cx3d, and mx3d profiles in x86-64 dedicated host profiles. For more information about the Multizone regions, see Region and data center locations for resource deployment.
Security group support for secondary IP addresses (GA)
You can now attach both primary and secondary IP addresses to a security group to refine the binding of security groups rules to a particular port IP instead of all IPs belonging to the port. Also, security group rules now support both source and destination on ingress and egress rules. This allows customers with multiple, secondary private IP addresses associated with a single vNIC to have the ability to apply security group rules to source and destination IP addresses, thus enabling finer granularity in security rules. This enhancement provides the capability to secure the primary IP different from the secondary IPs, and also applies to VIP prefixes (custom routes) used with a vNIC with IP spoofing disabled. For more information, see Applying security group rules to source and destination IP addresses.

      Kubernetes Service

      Release note
      29 May 2024
New! IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service version 1.30.
You can now create or update clusters to Kubernetes version 1.30. With Kubernetes 1.30, you get the latest stable enhancements from the Kubernetes community as well as enhancements to the IBM Cloud product.
IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service version 1.30 Kubernetes certification
IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service version 1.30 is now Kubernetes certified.
Important networking changes for IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service VPC clusters created at version 1.30.
For more information, see the 130 version information and Understanding Secure by Default Cluster VPC Networking.
Important changes to the default cluster provisioning behavior for new VPC clusters beginning with version 1.30.
Beginning with version 1.30, there is a new option available at cluster creation time via the UI, CLI, API, and Terraform. This new option manages outbound traffic protection for the cluster. The default behavior is to have outbound traffic protection enabled, which means new version 1.30 VPC clusters won't have access the public internet by default. If your cluster needs access to the public internet, you must specifically include the option (from the UI, CLI, API, and Terraform) to disable outbound traffic protection. Note that you can also disable outbound traffic protection after your cluster is created. You can also selectively allow outbound traffic as needed after your cluster is created. If you provision clusters via automation, make sure to adjust your automation accordingly. For more information, see the 1.30 version information, Understanding Secure by Default Cluster VPC Networking, and Managing outbound traffic protection in VPC clusters.
Managing outbound traffic protection in new version 1.30 VPC clusters.
With the introduction of Secure by Default Cluster VPC networking in version 1.30 and later clusters, there are several scenarios where you might need to adjust the security group settings for your clusters to allow outbound traffic to certain resources. For more information, see Managing outbound traffic protection in VPC clusters.

Confidential computing with Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) for Virtual Servers for VPC (select availability)
Confidential computing with Intel® Software Guard Extensions (SGX) protects your data through hardware-based server security by using isolated memory regions that are known as encrypted enclaves. This hardware-based computation helps protect your data from disclosure or modification. Which means that your sensitive data is encrypted while it is in virtual server instance memory by allowing applications to run in private memory space. To use SGX, you must install the SGX drivers and platform software on SGX-capable worker nodes. Then, design your app to run in an SGX environment. Confidential computing with Intel SGX for VPC is available only in US-South (Dallas) region. For more information, see Confidential computing with Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) for Virtual Servers for VPC.

Advertise routes to transit gateway and direct link for ingress routing integration

VPN for VPC now allows route advertisement so that on-prem CIDR blocks can be advertised to other VPCs without creating address prefixes. For more information, see Configuring route propagation for VPN gateways. For more information about migrating to advertised routes, see VPN for VPC migration to advertise routes.

Client VPN for VPC now allows route advertisement so that on-prem CIDR blocks can be advertised to other VPCs by creating a deliver action instead of a translate action. For more information, see Configuring route propagation for VPN servers. For more information about migrating to advertised routes, see Client VPN for VPC migration to advertise routes.

VPN for VPC: Configurable IKE identity and peer FQDN

When you configure a VPN gateway connection, you can now specify a peer FQDN as the peer gateway address. This allows you to use a dynamic public IP on the peer gateway. The VPN gateway connection also supports configuring the IKE identity with supported types: IPv4 address, FQDN, Hostname, and Key ID. The default local IKE identity value is the public IP address of the active member of the VPN gateway while the default peer IKE identity value is the peer gateway address or FQDN.

You can control which side initiates IKE protocol negotiations and rekeying processes on the VPN gateway connection. By default, the VPN gateway initiates IKE protocol negotiations and rekeying processes while also accepting IKE protocol negotiations or rekeying from the peer gateway. You can disable the VPN gateway from initiating IKE protocol negotiations and rekeying processes, and instead accept only the peer gateway to initiate IKE protocol negotiations and rekeying processes by setting Establish mode to Peer only. This enhancement enables you to connect the peer gateway behind a firewall and avoid conflicts in IKE negotiations. For more information, see Creating a VPN gateway.

Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud

      Release note
      24 Apr 2024
Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud 4.15 is available.
You can create or update clusters to version 4.15. With Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud version 4.15, you get the latest features, as well as component updates on Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud. For more information, see the 4.15 change log.
Important networking changes for Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud VPC clusters created with version 4.15.
For more information, see the 4.15 version information and Understanding Secure by Default Cluster VPC Networking.
Important changes to the default cluster provisioning behavior for new VPC clusters beginning with version 4.15.
Beginning with version 4.15, there is a new option available at cluster creation time via the UI, CLI, API, and Terraform. This new option manages outbound traffic protection for the cluster. The default behavior is to have outbound traffic protection enabled, which means new version 4.15 VPC clusters won't have access the public internet by default. For more information, see the 4.15 version information, Understanding Secure by Default Cluster VPC Networking, and Managing outbound traffic protection in VPC clusters.
Managing outbound traffic protection in new version 4.15 VPC clusters.
With the introduction of Secure by Default Cluster VPC networking in version 4.15 and later clusters, there are several scenarios where you might need to adjust the security group settings for your clusters to allow outbound traffic to certain resources. For more information, see Managing outbound traffic protection in VPC clusters.
Red Hat CoreOS worker nodes are available for new VPC clusters beginning with version 4.15.
You can now specify the Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS (RHCOS) operating system when you provision a new VPC cluster. Note that the OpenShift Data Foundation and cluster autoscaler add-ons do not yet support RHCOS worker nodes. If you need to install these add-ons in your cluster, use RHEL worker nodes instead. For more information, see the Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS (RHCOS) documentation.
Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud master and worker node fix packs.

      New capabilities

      New capabilities include:

      • Bug fixes
      • Performance enhancements to transform APIs (generate Java classes)
      User action required

If you generate a Java method and it fails with the error message Invalid Java selected for transformation or error locating COBOL needed for transformation. Try selecting valid Java to translate. For more information, check the full log in the Output view., then you need to regenerate your Java classes.

The generated Java class might include a reset() method, which can't be generated with the Generate Java method flow, instead returning exceptions such as: Failed to get COBOL paragraph name for method reset. For more information, check the full log in the Output view.

You need to delete the reset() method from the generated Java code. This method will not be automatically generated in a future release of watsonx Code Assistant for Z.

Generic operating system custom images with Virtual Server Instances and Bare Metal Servers for VPC (beta)
Network boot of operating systems with Bare Metal Servers for VPC (beta)
When you create a bare metal server on IBM Cloud® Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), you can select to network boot an operating system over the network. The operating system image can be hosted on your own server or on a public server. You can install the booted operating system to a disk or you can run the operating system without a disk. For more information, see Network booting your own operating system with Bare Metal Servers on VPC.

      New capabilities
      New capabilities include:
      • REST API enhancements
      • Bug and security fixes
      User action required
Method generation might fail with the message Cannot find COBOL paragraph. The cause is that the source code is missing a section name for the program. The format of the paragraph name that is used to distinguish the paragraph location is missing. To fix the issue:
      1. To capture the paragraph, add a section name in PROCEDURE DIVISION.
      2. Rescan the file with ADDI to restart the process for transforming the program.
      3. To verify, when you generate the classes at the start of the Z Open Editor plug-in process, check the method and its linked paragraph name. For example, look for something similar to <SectionName>:FIRST_SENTENCES.

      Virtual Private Cloud

      Release note
      26 Mar 2024
Security group support for secondary IP addresses (select availability)
Accounts that are granted special approval to preview this feature can now attach both primary and secondary IP addresses to a security group to refine the binding of security groups rules to a particular port IP instead of all IPs belonging to the port.

Accounts that are granted special approval to preview this feature can now create a Private Path service and Private Path network load balancer.

Private Path services provide private connectivity for IBM Cloud and third-party services. A Private Path service requires a Private Path network load balancer to deploy a service on IBM Cloud and a Virtual Private Endpoint (VPE) gateway for consumers to connect to the service. Traffic stays on the IBM Cloud backbone without traversing the public internet.

For more information, see the Private Path solution guide. If you are interested in getting early access to this beta offering, contact your IBM Support representative.

      IBM watsonx Code Assistant

      Release note
      18 Mar 2024
      New capabilities

      New capabilities include:

      • REST API enhancements
      • Bug and security fixes
      User action required

When you use the IBM Z Open Editor extension to generate Java classes, the main method might be in the list of methods eligible for code generation from the LLM. If so, you need to delete your saved Java class design from your Db2 database.

To delete your class design, run a SQL query against your database. Replace $program-id with the PROGRAM-ID of your COBOL program.

      DELETE FROM EZSCH.WCAZCATALOG WHERE appName = 'EZSCH' AND moduleName = 'semantic-mapping' AND secondaryKey = 'mapping' AND fileKey = '$program-id' AND version = '1.0.1';

If you use the Db2 Connect extension for Visual Studio Code, and connected the extension to your database, you can use it to run the SQL query:

      1. Create a delete_mapping.sql file that contains the SQL query.
      2. Open the DB2 Connect extension and click the Execute SQL File icon.
      3. Choose the delete_mapping.sql file and click Execute.

After you run the SQL query, regenerate the Java class design and then generate the Java classes in the IBM Z Open Editor. The list of methods eligible for code generation omit the main method.

If you generate a Java method and it fails with the error message Invalid Java selected for transformation or error locating COBOL needed for transformation. Try selecting valid Java to translate. For more information, check the full log in the Output view, then you need to regenerate your Java classes.

During class generation, some suggested Java variables might be missing their type, for example:

Example of a missing type for a Java variable Type payment int PAYMENT variable commission int COMMISSION variable customer CUSTOMER variable

A missing type doesn't affect the actual class generation / Java class design process, or the conversion itself, and will be addressed in a future release.

Also, from the example, Java variable name suggestion might have an initial uppercase character (Customer rather than customer). If you accept the suggested variable name, and continue to generate classes, the Java code is incorrect. You need to override the suggested variable names, for example, change Customer to customer, before you click Generate Java classes.

      Virtual Private Cloud

      Release note
      12 Mar 2024
      Virtual Network Interfaces for VPC

A new feature is generally available in the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) service that expands the support for virtual network interfaces. The following features are available.

      • Virtual network interfaces have an independent lifecycle, which means that when you delete a resource to which the virtual network interface is attached, the virtual network interface persists and retains its IP address.
      • New instances and bare metal servers can be created with virtual network interfaces attached to new child resources called network attachments.
      • Virtual network interfaces support secondary IP addresses.
      • For compatibility with existing clients, instances and bare metal servers with virtual network interfaces include a read-only representation of their network attachments and virtual network interfaces as legacy network interface child resources.
      • For instances and bare metal servers with virtual network interfaces, the IAM permissions for options to allow IP spoofing or disable infrastructure NAT are managed on their attached virtual network interfaces.
      • Flow log collectors can target instance network attachments and virtual network interfaces.

You can choose to defer access to this feature through IBM Support. Users in an account that has deferred access will not be able to create instances or bare metal servers with virtual network interfaces. If you need more time to assess, remediate, and test changes for virtual network interfaces, request deferral for your production accounts while you complete the mitigations using your test accounts.

Improved availability of manual database backups in Planning Analytics Workspace on Planning Analytics as a Service

A new location for manual database backups in Planning Analytics Workspace on Planning Analytics as a Service makes it easier to access and use backups.

Prior to Planning Analytics Workspace 2.0.93, manual database backups were stored in the .backupsets directory of File Manager on the Modeling Workbench, which is within the Planning Analytics Workspace database. This location made it impossible to access manual backups when the database was unavailable.

Conversely, automated database backups were stored to a location external to the database, which remains accessible even when the associated Planning Analytics Workspace database is unavailable.

As of Planning Analytics Workspace 2.0.93, both manual and automated database backups in Planning Analytics Workspace on Planning Analytics as a Service are stored in a location external to the database. All manual backups created in Planning Analytics Workspace 2.0.93 or later and all automated backups appear on the database Backups tab, regardless of the current state of the database.

This change means that manual backups created prior to Planning Analytics Workspace 2.0.93 and stored in File Manager no longer appear on the Backups tab. You can, however, continue to access any such backups directly through File Manager.

      Virtual Private Cloud

      Release note
      20 Feb 2024
Virtual Network Interfaces for VPC (Select availability)

Accounts that have been granted special approval can preview a new feature in the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) service that expands the support for virtual network interfaces.

If you have automation for managing your virtual network interfaces, bare metal servers, and file share mount targets, and you are not interested in expanded support for virtual network interfaces, you'll have the option to opt out when the feature becomes generally available.

      Release note
      12 Feb 2024
      Indexes

In rare cases, background index updates for specific indexes would fail until a database node was restarted. After a node restart, the node would immediately start updating these indexes. If this generated a lot of indexing activity, customer requests involving this node would see degraded performance during that activity. This release fixes the issue with background indexing failures. For more information, see Cloudant Query.
