Summary
With this service, you can create point-in-time copies of your block storage boot and data volumes. The snapshots are stored in Cloud Object Storage.
The first snapshot is a full backup of the volume. The subsequent snapshots of the same volume are incremental; they capture only the changes that occurred since the last snapshot was taken.
You can take snapshots of individual volumes and you can create a consistency group to take snapshots of multiple volumes that are attached to the same VSI simultaneously.
You can use these snapshots later to create stand-alone data volumes, provision new virtual server instances, or add new data volumes to existing virtual server instance. You can use the snapshots to recover operations after a disastrous event or to expand your VPC to other regions.
Features
Data volume snapshots
You can create point in time copies of your data with our snapshot feature and copy data to another data center for disaster recovery readiness.
Boot volume snapshots
You can take a snapshot of a boot volume that is attached to a running virtual server instance. Later, you can create a virtual server instance that is initialized with a boot volume that is created from that snapshot. The instance profile of the new instance doesn't need to match the original profile that was used to create the snapshot.
Consistency groups
You can take snapshots of all the block storage volumes that are attached to a virtual server simultaneously. These snapshots are loosely coupled. They can be managed individually and be used to create new volumes or restore a virtual server instance.
Capacity
You can take up to 100 snapshots per volume in your region. The cumulative size of all snapshots for a volume can be up to 10 TB.
Encryption for data security
Snapshots inherit the encryption type from the source block storage volume. Your data is protected either by provider-managed encryption, or by using your own root keys.
Fast restore clones
You can create and keep a clone of the snapshot in another zone within your region instead of a Cloud Object Storage bucket. Restoring a volume by using a fast restore clone creates a fully functioning volume much faster than a normal snapshot, which helps reducing recovery time during an incident.
Global footprint
Snapshots of your block storage volumes are stored in Object Storage in the same region as your VPC. You can copy your snapshots to another region and use them to restore volumes in a different geography.
Flexible billing
Billing is affected by the size and the number of snapshots that you keep in various regions. Data transfer charges also apply when you copy snapshots to another region.
