Upgrading the Vyatta 5400 and reusing its IP Addresses
This option allows you to reuse your existing Vyatta 5400 device as an equivalent IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance (VRA), and keep your associated IP addresses. The following procedures provide instructions for upgrading either a stand alone Vyatta 5400, or two Vyatta 5400 devices operating in a High Availability (HA) pair.
Upgrading a stand alone Vyatta 5400
To upgrade a single Vyatta 5400 to a IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance, perform the following procedure:
-
Ensure that you have backed up your 5400 and stored the data in two different locations. This includes SSH keys, SSL certs, scripts and any other files necessary to recover your current Vyatta 5400 configuration, if necessary.
-
Reload your Vyatta 5400 to a default IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance using the instructions in this topic.
An OS reload will generate a new password for the root and Vyatta user IDs.
-
Make a note of the new IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance password.
-
Configure the newly reloaded VRA with your desired settings using these instructions.
Upgrading a Vyatta 5400 high availability pair
To upgrade two Vyatta 5400s in an HA pair, perform the following procedure:
-
Identify the Backup Vyatta 5400 device and reload it first as a IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance, using the procedure above.
Ideally, a functional HA configuration shows all interfaces as either BACKUP or MASTER on a particular node. When in doubt, use the
show vrrp
command to confirm. -
Configure the newly reloaded VRA with your desired settings using these instructions.
-
The Master Vyatta 5400 and the Backup IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance will be in a VRRP pair. Change the current Backup IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance to become the Master using the VRRP command
reset VRRP master
.This action will cause an outage in any existing sessions, and the sessions state will be listed as Lost. Any existing NAT session will also be reset.
-
Verify that the new Master IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance is functioning as desired.
-
Perform the reload procedure above on the current Backup Vyatta 5400 to upgrade it to a VRA.
-
After the second reload, configure the Backup IBM Cloud® Virtual Router Appliance as desired, using these instructions.
Reverting back to Vyatta 5400
The reload action is not permitted by default. Start an IBM Support case to request that the ACS-Security team grant you access to your reloads. To revert back to a Vyatta 5400, run an OS reload on the system you need to roll back, then apply a backup of the old configurations.
