Working with metrics in a region where IBM Cloud Monitoring is not available

In IBM Cloud, platform metrics that are generated by IBM Cloud services in a region, location, or datacenter where the IBM Cloud Monitoring service is not available might be managed through a different region.

You can monitor metrics in your account for example, for DevOps or troubleshooting. Services that generate platform metrics in a location where the IBM Cloud Monitoring service is not available can send metrics to a different region where the IBM Cloud Monitoring service is available. You can monitor what is happening in the IBM Cloud for that service at all times.

Understanding platform metrics

IBM Cloud Monitoring provides dashboards that allow you to gain operational visibility into the performance and health of your applications, services and platforms. You can monitor and troubleshoot issues and define alerts based on specific operational criteria. You can also create custom dashboards to meet your organization's needs.

Platform metrics are metrics that are generated by IBM Cloud services. By default, platform metrics are available through the IBM Cloud Monitoring instance that is available in the same region where the service that generates it is available. However, you can use IBM Cloud Metrics Routing to provide additional flexibility and route platform metrics to configured IBM Cloud Monitoring instances based on defined rules.

Each IBM Cloud service documents the metrics that it sends to IBM Cloud Monitoring. See Service generating metrics for information on the services sending metrics and the type of metrics that are sent.

Managing platform metrics

To monitor platform metrics, you must provision an instance of the IBM Cloud Monitoring service in the region where metrics are sent. For more information, see Enabling platform metrics and Monitoring platform metrics.

How can you identify data from the Madrid location?

Platform metrics include an attribute ibm_location that specifies the region, location, or datacenter where the resource that generates the metrics is available. For example, for Madrid, you can see the location of metrics set to eu-es.

Metrics that are sent by an agent might include the location if you set a tag to indicate the location.
