Die SoftLayer-Anwendungsprogrammierschnittstelle (API) ist die Entwicklungsschnittstelle, die Entwicklern und Systemadministratoren direkte Interaktion mit dem Back-End-System von SoftLayer ermöglicht.

Viele der Funktionen des Kundenportals werden von SoftLayer API unterstützt. Im Allgemeinen kann eine Interaktion, die im Kundenportal möglich ist, auch in der API ausgeführt werden. Da programmatisch mit allen Abschnitten der SoftLayer-Umgebung innerhalb der API interagiert werden kann, können Sie die API einsetzten, um Aufgaben zu automatisierten.

Die SLAPI ist ein Remote Procedure Call-System. Bei jedem Aufruf werden Daten an einen API-Endpunkt gesendet und im Gegenzug strukturierte Daten erhalten. Das Format, das zum Senden und Empfangen von Daten mithilfe der API verwendet wird, hängt von der von Ihnen gewählten Implementierung der API ab. Die SLAPI verwendet derzeit SOAP, XML-RPC oder REST für die Datenübertragung.
