Getting Started with IBM i Managed on PowerVS

In this getting started tutorial, we'll take you through steps to access your IBM i instance.

Before you begin

Before you begin, be sure to create an IBM i Managed on PowerVS service instance in your IBM Cloud account. To complete this tutorial, you need the Manager service role or higher.

Determine network connectivity details

As part of the provisioning process, an onboarding session will be scheduled with you to finalize network connectivity IP addresses. To later lookup the IP address of the LPAR:

  1. From the IBM Cloud Resource List, select the IBM i Managed on PowerVS service instance.
  2. Navigate to the Resources page where a list of your IBM i virtual servers will shown.
  3. Select an IBM i virtual server instance to view it's configuration details.

Configure the IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS)

The IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS) may be used to establish a terminal session with the IBM i instance. You can download the base package and optional packages for Windows and Linux from the IBM Support Site.

  1. Start IBM i Access Client Solutions and select the Management --> System Configurations option.
  2. Create a new system configuration, and enter connectivity options including the system name and IP address (if name not registered in DNS).
  3. Click Verify Connection to validate the network connectivity from your client machine to the IBM i instance.

Login to the IBM i

After configuring the connection settings for your IBM i instance, complete the following steps to establish a 5250 session:

  1. Select the IBM i instance in the system dropdown field and click on the 5250 Emulator link. A new session will appear prompting you to login.
