The Istio managed add-on is migrating from the in-cluster operator in 1.23.x to a cyclic Helm upgrade installation in 1.24. This upgrade requires a different process than earlier versions, so review the migration documentation before getting started.

With the move to a Helm-based installation, the gateways are switching from the istio/gateways chart that the in-cluster operator used to the istio/gateway chart that Istio recommends for Helm-based Istio. The main change is that the Istio gateways are set to image: auto to have the sidecar injector automatically select the image to use.

With the move away from the IstioOperator CustomResource to use the Helm value.yaml charts, addon-istio is no longer supporting more than 1 default gateway (istio-ingressgateway-public-2 and istio-ingressgateway-public-3). However, the default gateway's value.yaml can be customized by the user and the user can install the previous gateways as additional custom gateways by using Helm.
