FAQ for IBM Cloud Logs

Frequently asked questions about IBM® Cloud Logs.

Is there a recommended log message batch size and maximum size limit for log messages that are sent by using the API?

The API is limited to a message size of 2 MB, which is approximately 3000 medium-sized logs.

How long is data retained by IBM Cloud Logs if IBM Cloud Object Storage data and metrics buckets have not been configured?

If neither one or separate IBM Cloud Object Storage data and metrics buckets have been configured, IBM Cloud Logs retains data for the retention plan selected for the instance. If no data bucket is configured, logs will only be viewable through Priority insights for the length of the retention plan.

Do I need to archive logs separately if a single IBM Cloud Object Storage bucket is used for both data and metrics?

It is recommended that separate IBM Cloud Object Storage buckets be used for the IBM Cloud Logs data bucket and the metrics bucket and that you do not combine these two buckets into a single IBM Cloud Object Storage bucket, even though it is technically feasible to do so.

Are charges related to IBM Cloud® Object Storage use by IBM Cloud Logs separate from IBM Cloud Logs billed charges?

Yes, usage of the IBM Cloud® Object Storage service is a separate cost from IBM Cloud Logs.

In the IBM Cloud® Object Storage pricing model, IBM Cloud Logs requests for data storage are ‘Class A’ requests, and IBM Cloud Logs requests for data retrieval during queries are ‘Class B’ requests. For more information, see request classes.

The IBM Cloud Logs plan cost applies to the data pipeline processing the data in IBM Cloud Logs. You can adjust the data pipelines by using the TCO Optimizer.
