Backup service instances
The IBM Cloud® Backup and Recovery UI provides access to a list of available service instances, and detailed views from the backup policy management dashboard.
Details of an instance
- You must be logged in to your IBM cloud account and have an active IBM Cloud® Backup and Recovery instance.
- View the details of an instance by either:
- clicking on it to launch into the backup policy management dashboard, and clicking launch dashboard, or
- click the overflow menu to the right of your instance, and select launch dashboard.
- the overflow menu also includes the option to rename the instance, edit tags, and delete the instance
- The dashboard displays a quick glance of getting started, health, protection, compliance, data source connections, and recoveries.

Each alert has a severity rating that indicates the seriousness of the problem:
- Critical – Immediate action is required because it detects a severe problem that might be imminent or major functionality is not working, such as a missing VM backup.
- Warning – Action is required, but the affected functionality is still working, such as the restore task failed due to some external target connectivity, some credentials issues or both.
- Healthy – No action is required.

Protection
Displays protection groups that are found by group type, groups, policy, BCO, status. Indicates number that succeeded, have a warning, failed, running, canceled, met BCO, missed BCO.

| Backup Type (VDI-based) | Database: MS SQL Server | For VDI backups, the backup and restore retention requirements are identical to SQL native dumps. This means that you need to perform a full backup, incremental backup (equivalent to SQL Server Differential backup), and T-log backups for PIT recoveries. For example, if you have a retention requirement of 7 days for an SQL Server DB backup, your VDI protection job policy should can ensure that the retention period that encompasses the full and incremental retention period is greater than 7 days. Similar to SQL native dumps, a full and incremental backup is required for restore. Setting the retention period for longer than 7 days to encompass the full, incremental, and even t-log backups will can ensure that there is no hole in the recovery when using VDI. |

Data protection
The Data Protection lists the Protection, Recoveries, Sources and Policies that you can add and monitor for your service instance.
Protection
Use the protection configuration window to create a Protection Group.
- From the Protect drop-down list, select the type of Databases, Physical Server, or Kubernetes Cluster for which you want to create a protection group.
- Choose the Objects (with Source), enter a Protection Group Name, configure a standard Protection Policy (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) or create a new custom Protection Policy.
- Click Protect to finalize your configurations; the protection group is created.
Recover
IBM Cloud Backup and Recovery provides the ability to recover files and folders from a Snapshot created earlier by a Protection Group. Files and folders can be recovered to their original location (limitations apply to physical Servers and specific operating systems) or to a newly specified location, which can be within the original source or a different one. For more information, see Recover Physical Server Files or Folders.
- From the Recover drop-down list, select the type of Databases, Physical Server, or Kubernetes Cluster for which you want to create a new recovery.
- You can search for a partial name by clicking and entering text. Note: Wildcard* is supported in this search.
- Choose the Objects (with Source), enter a Protection Group Name, select a Storage Domain, and set a Date Range. Select all that apply for each category, and click to Clear your entries, or click to Apply your selections.
- Click Next: Recover Options to create a New Recovery if your search results are valid, or adjust your query and try again.

Policies
Protection policies are a collection of reusable settings that define when and how sources, such as physical hosts, VMs, and databases are protected. For more information, see Policy Creation.
- Create a Protection Policy for your service instance.
- Add a policy name.
- Establish when to backup: minutes, hours, days, week or month.
- Determine data retention:
- Retain for Days, Weeks, Months or Years
- Lock for Days, Weeks, Months or Years
- More options:
- Create policy name for build and determine if DataLock should be set: NOTE - If you enable DataLock, snapshots are retained for the duration specified in the Lock Field
- Summary displays the Backup choices and Retry Options
- Backup options:
- Preiodic full backup: Set for Day(s), Week, Month or Year (Click + to add more entries)
- Quiet Times: Set for a Start Time, End Time and Day(s) of the Week (Click + to add more entries)
- Retry Options: Number of retries, and number of minutes to wait
- Log Backup (Databases): Every minute or hours, retain for day(s), week(s), month(s) or year(s), and lock for day(s), week(s), month(s) or year(s) that has a max number based on retained value.

System
The System lists the Data Source Connections where you can create new connections, and the system health for a service instance.
Data source connections
Create data source connections to establish connectivity between your sources and this data source. A connection consists of one or more virtual servers that move data between your data sources and IBM Cloud Backup. For more information, see Deploy data source connector.
For Kubernetes and OpenShift clusters, data source connections with Deployment Platform options (ROKS VPC, IKS VPC, ROKS classic, IKS classic) must be created from this instance dashboard. These options are not available when creating connections from the Backup Recovery Manager. For detailed instructions, see Register Kubernetes or OpenShift as a data source.

Viewing reports
View reports for a single instance to analyze and improve the user experience.
Choosing a report type
From the Select Report drop-down list, choose a report type to identify the information that you need. Currently, six built-in reports are available for a single instance for IBM Cloud® Backup and Recovery.
Backup Summary - This report shows an overview of the Protection Groups that are run on the data source Instance for the specified filter criteria. For each Protection Group, this report shows how many times the Protection Group has run, total bytes read and statistics about the last time the Protection Group ran.
Failed Objects - This report lists all the Objects for which an error occurred during the last runs and prevented the Objects from being backed up.
Protected Objects Heatmap - This is a visual report that displays the status of the backup tasks of Objects that are associated with a Protection Group.
Protection Runs Summary - This report provides a summary and list of all backup activities per object per run.
Protection Summary by Object Type - This report shows the protection status of Objects as of the last runs that occurred in the specified date range.
Unprotected/Protected VMs - This report provides lists of VMs protected and not protected by IBM Cloud Backup.

The report that you download inherits the filters that you applied.
Filtering report data
Each report type helps you view, visualize, and analyze data. You have full control over the data that you choose to include and view in your reports. Use the filters to pare down your report until it shows only the data that you want in the report. The filter options change depending on the type of report.
Downloading reports
Download reports in CSV format from the single instance reports page.
- On any report type, click the Download icon and the report gets downloaded to your system.
The time taken to generate a report depends on multiple factors such as the number of clusters selected, other filters applied on the report, and the amount of data. If the report is large, it might take a few moments to download the report.
